The Chapel Knitting Project
For many years, the ladies of the Chapel have knitted or crocheted vests, blankets and other woollen items for missionary hospitals. These have been collected and taken to the Medical Missionary News depot, loaded into a container and shipped to Mission Hospitals in Africa, South America or India.
Over the last 5 years or so, this has expanded to include knitters from outside the Chapel and now there are more than 15 knitters from Bridgwater and Street as well as the Polden Villages. In 2006, about 2500 items were knitted and sent off to hospitals, mostly in Africa. Photographs and letters of thanks from these hospitals have been circulated among the knitters so they can see how much their hard work is appreciated overseas. The Chapel bought £1000 of wool in 2006 from a factory, to supply the knitters, many of whom are house-bound and rely on the wool being delivered to them. It is quite a task delivering and collecting the knitted items from these skilled and enthusiastic knitters! One lady crocheted a magnificent blanket every week for many years, until her recent death aged 96.
Donations of wool are always welcome. Please telephone Trevor Davis on 01278 722294 if you have any unwanted wool, or if you would like to join the knitting group.
